John Maynard Keynes entre o Velho e o Novo Institucionalismo

Resumo

O artigo considera as possíveis compatibilidades (em termos epistemológicos e ontológicos) das concepções de convenção e de instituições no pensamento de John maynard Keynes, Thorstein Veblen e Douglass North. Argumentamos, inicialmente, que enquanto Veblen sugere uma abordagem das instituições baseada nos instintos, North sustenta uma abordagem das instituições baseada na escolha racional, o que produzirá distintas concepções sobre as instituições e o mundo social. Na sequência, apresentamos a postura filosófica geral de Keynes, iluminando seus comprometimentos ontológicos e as implicações epistemológicas de sua ontologia. Finalmente, trazemos à luz o significado das instituições no pensamento de Keynes através de sua noção de convenção e do processo de tomada de decisão. Deste modo, estaremos aptos a empreender uma comparação entre a concepção de convenção em Keynes e o conceito de instituições como hábitos mentais em Veblen e a ideia de instituições como regras do jogo em North.
